The Seattle Kraken (29-34-5) hit the road to face the Chicago Blackhawks (20-38-9) tonight in their third and final matchup of the season. Both teams have taken a win in their previous meetings, each finishing with a 3-1 scoreline, making tonight’s game the deciding factor in the season series.
Tolvanen and Montour leading the charge
Since returning from the 4 Nations Face-Off break, Eeli Tolvanen has been a force offensively, recording seven points in his last 10 games. With five of those coming from goals, he has now taken over as Seattle’s leading goal scorer this season—a bright spot in what has been an up-and-down campaign for the Kraken.
Brandon Montour has been just as impactful from the blue line, tallying 10 points and six goals since the break. His offensive surge has cemented him as the Kraken's single-season record holder for goals by a defenseman, surpassing Vince Dunn. With each passing game, Montour continues to prove why he was a major addition to Seattle’s roster this season.
Who gets the start in net?
With back-to-back games on the schedule, Seattle’s goaltending decision will be one to watch. The Kraken play in Minnesota tomorrow night, and they have yet to win the second game of a back-to-back this season. That raises the question: Will Philipp Grubauer get the nod tonight against a struggling Blackhawks team, or will the Kraken roll with Joey Daccord and save Grubauer for the tougher matchup against the Wild?
Grubauer has been solid since returning from the AHL, posting a 1.50 GAA and .939 SV% in two starts. His recent success could earn him the start against Chicago as a confidence-building opportunity. However, if the Kraken want to give him the tougher test in Minnesota, Daccord could get the start tonight, hoping to bounce back from his recent struggles.
A game Seattle needs to win
Seattle may be outside of the playoff picture, but finishing the season strong and developing consistency is still key for this team’s future. A win tonight would give them their first season series victory over Chicago and provide much-needed momentum heading into a tough road game tomorrow.
Puck drops at 7:30 PM Central Time.
