Entering its fourth season in their franchise history, the Seattle Kraken are looking to get back to success. There may be one thing that can help get them back on track, and that is a singular leader, a Captain, that can lead them out of the depths and up to the surface.
After naming defenseman Mark Giordano as the first captain in Kraken history, they have remained captain-less since he departed from the team at the 2022 trade deadline to Toronto. Since then, there have been a plethora of players with an Assistant Captain crest on their chest, but none repping the "C".
Is it time to name the second captain in Kraken history?
The decision should ultimately be a yes. The Seattle Kraken have to name their second captain in franchise history, and they need to do it before the start of this upcoming season. A concrete and stable hierarchy will aid the younger and newer players who have just joined the franchise. We see it all over the NHL, that a stable leadership group can turn your middle-of-the-road team into a powerhouse.
If that isn't enough, here is a fun fact for you. Since the 1972 Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup over the New York Rangers, every single cup winner has had a captain lift the trophy first. The last 42 teams to win it all have had a captain at the head of the ship. Why mess with something that is seemingly much bigger than the game itself?
It all comes down to who would don the "C" on their chest for the 2024-25 season. As the best player from a year ago, a solid choice is forward Jared McCann. Even with the lower-end numbers of franchise records in goals and assists, he has been a part of the Kraken's history from the beginning. Additionally, he has been their best skater over the past few seasons, and his performance on the ice grants him a nomination for being the next captain.
