On Thursday, Oct. 15, the Seattle Kraken played against the Tampa Bay Lightning for the fourth game of their five game East Coast road trip. Seattle unfortunately fell to the Lightning, losing 4-3 in overtime. This loss was not the worst thing to happen to the Kraken in this game, as Brandon Montour left the game early due to sustaining an injury.
The day after Montour exited the game early, the Kraken recalled defenseman Ty Nelson from their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate team, the Coachella Valley Firebirds. Immediately, the alarm bells were ringing, because the first thought that goes through your mind once there is a call-up is, "How bad is this injury?"
The Kraken are already down Ryan Lindgren for the next four to six weeks with an upper-body injury. It would be a tough blow for the Kraken to lose another veteran defenseman for an extended period of time.
Luckily, the Kraken shared an update on Montour, and things are looking like they'll turn around for him early, as he is only day-to-day with his upper-body injury.
Great sign Montour will be back on the ice soon
Of course, you never want to see a player go down with injury regardless. The fact that Montour left the game early was a hardship for Seattle, but they managed to hold off Tampa Bay with just five defensemen on the ice, forcing the game to go into overtime. When a player leaves the game early, it's hard not to imagine the worst case scenario.
For Montour, the fact that he is only listed as day-to-day is the news the Kraken need to make sure he'll be back on the ice sooner rather than later. He is a huge part of the Kraken's defensive core and was even named an alternate captain for the team ahead of the start of the 2026-27 season.
Montour's impact both on and off the ice is palpable in Seattle. The Kraken need him back defending the blue line to try and ensure their success they've had early in the season continues.
The Kraken have now finished their East Coast road trip and are heading back to Seattle, where they will host the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday, Oct. 20. With a nice couple days to rest between games, hopefully Montour will be able to get back out there with the team on Tuesday.
