The Seattle Kraken are the newest team in the National Hockey League (NHL) and have only been in the league for six seasons. They don't have the best track record, aside from making it to the second round of the playoffs in their second season, in 2022-23.
Since then, the Kraken have had a rough go of it in the NHL, falling to the bottom of the standings every time. For the 2026-27 season, this all changes. Sure, the season is just starting off, but the Kraken are having a historic start to the season, their best to date.
In Seattle's first 11 games, they have secured seven wins and 15 points, an incredible feat they should absolutely be proud of. It calls into question, how are the Kraken doing it?
Seattle finally finding offensive edge
For the past five seasons, the Kraken have struggled severely when it comes to generating offense. They were often outshot and outscored by the opposing team, which is what led to these constant losses. However, this season, it seems as though Seattle has turned the tide around.
Of their seven wins, five were thanks to the Kraken scoring five or more goals. Their two other wins were in a shootout, 3-2 against the Philadelphia Flyers and 4-3 against the Detroit Red Wings. Despite almost losing these two games, the Kraken battled back and secured the two points.
Seattle didn't have many changes to their forwards group during the offseason, only adding Mackie Samoskevich and Curtis Douglas, the latter of which has only played in two games for the Kraken so far this season. Samoskevich has been excellent for Seattle, though, as he currently has the second-most goals for the Kraken to start the season.
Even though Samoskevich has been having a great start to the season with his new team, he is not the sole reason Seattle is finding success to kick off 2026-27. In each game, the Kraken come out with a full team effort. They play consistently and cohesively, looking for scoring chances and battling defensively to get the puck back; the Kraken look like a totally different team.
After almost a month of regular season play, the Kraken are currently ranked third in the Pacific Division, sitting just under the Vegas Golden Knights, who have 16 points. While it's still way too early to determine who will make the playoffs, the Kraken are in a very good position early on in the standings.
