Ahead of their National Hockey League (NHL) game on Saturday, Oct. 24, the Seattle Kraken announced forward Jared McCann would not be playing. The team only shared that he was being evaluated for a lower-body injury and would be unavailable to play in this game. As a precaution, the Kraken recalled Jani Nyman from their American Hockey League (AHL) team, the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

It was unclear how serious McCann's injury was, but on Sunday, the team shared that he will be out for 10 weeks with a lower-body injury.

McCann's injury is a tough blow for both him and the Kraken

The Kraken are off to a strong start to the 2026-27 season, winning seven of their first 12 games. It's been a full team effort for Seattle to start the season, and McCann has eight points in 11 games. He has been a primary driving force of the Kraken's offense, currently leading Seattle in all-time points with 291. Jordan Eberle is second on the list with 241 points, a full 50 less than McCann.

With McCann out for a considerable period of time, losing him is a tough blow to Seattle's strong start to the season. McCann has been playing on the top line with Matty Beniers at center and Mackie Samoskevich or Jordan Eberle on the right wing. Now that McCann will not be with the team for two and a half months, head coach Lane Lambert will have to change up the line combinations. Last night against the Wild, the top line was made up of Bobby McMann, Beniers, and Eberle. The trio will have to hold down the top line for the time being.

Last season, McCann missed 30 games with a lower-body injury and chronic pain on top of it. During training camp, McCann was all smiles as his chronic pain was no longer bothering him, and he was ready to get back out onto the ice with his team. Although the team didn't share the extent of his injury, it's hard not to think back about the nagging issues McCann had last season. Hopefully, this time of rest and recovery will get McCann ready to finish out the season healthy in Seattle.
