On Oct. 1, the Seattle Kraken played their season opener against the Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The game went in Seattle's favor with a 6-1 victory. However, forward Jacob Melanson exited the game early with an upper-body injury. He only spent 9:31 on the ice and took 15 shifts.
Usually, the Kraken like to keep the extent of their player's injuries under wraps. However, on Saturday, Oct. 10, the team shared just how bad Melanson's injury was.
Melanson faced a serious injury
The Kraken shared on social media that while they initially believed Melanson had a normal upper-body injury, it was more than that. Melanson suffered from an anterior mediastinal hematoma with vascular pseudoaneurysm.
In layman's terms, he had a collection of blood in front of his chest cavity, likely as a result of trauma. The Kraken thanked the medical team in Alberta, Canada for tending to Melanson's injury. It was likely that he was rushed to seek medical attention after leaving the ice. Now, we know just how bad it was. Luckily, it didn't get any worse.
Melanson out indefinitely
As Melanson recovers from the hardship and difficulty faced with this serious injury, the Kraken announced he will be away from the team for an indefinite amount of time. With all the testing and uncertainty surrounding when he will be able to play again, this is for the best.
The most important thing is that Melanson is healthy again. Whether or not he takes to the ice again this season doesn't even matter when one is dealing with an injury this severe. If Melanson does get back out there with the Kraken this season, that would be phenomenal. However, let's take these moments one day at a time as he begins to recover from this terrifying injury.
