The Seattle Kraken opened their season against the Calgary Flames on Thursday, Oct. 1. This was the last time the Flames would have a home opener at the Saddledome, so it was a bittersweet moment for them. The Kraken, however, showed no mercy.
The Kraken opened the game with three goals in the third period, taking a strong, early lead. Seattle kept a strong hold on their lead since neither team scored in the second period. Seattle scored two more goals early in the third to take a commanding five-goal lead. The Flames got on the board within the last five minutes, denying Seattle the shutout, but another goal from the Kraken less than a minute later ensured their 6-1 victory.
Eberle put the Kraken on the board first
Every season, fans ask the same question: who will score the first goal of the season? Seattle answered that question early into the first period, and who else but captain Jordan Eberle earned the honor.
Calgary's Matvei Gridin went to the box for holding Shane Wright, sending the Kraken to their first power-play opportunity of the game. Right off the face-off, the Kraken won and sent it to Vince Dunn at the blue line. He passed it up to Jared McCann, who took a shot. Eberle got a hold of the loose puck and redirected it into the net to score the Kraken's first goal of the season.
Eberle has been a large part of the Kraken since their beginning. He was named the second-ever captain of the Kraken, which is a great honor. Eberle continues to step up in the name of leadership and on the scoreboard. This will surely be just one of many goals this season for Eberle.
Stephenson is now in the top 10 of Kraken all-time points leaders
Although Eberle put the Kraken on the board first, it was a full team effort with several players contributing to the score. Chandler Stephenson scored his first goal of the season just three minutes into the third period. It was a beautiful goal, with him leaping over a fallen Zach Whitecloud on his way to the net to secure Seattle's fourth goal of the game.
This goal was not only a gorgeous moment in hockey itself, but it was also a historic moment in Kraken history. Stephenson's goal in this game now puts him in 10th place on the Kraken's overall points leaderboard. Stephenson now has 101 total points in his time with Seattle, edging out former forward Alexander Wennberg.
Stephenson has only been with the Kraken since the 2024-25 season, so to reach the top 10 in the all-time Kraken points leaderboard is an incredible feat. Let's hope he keeps it up throughout the season.
Daccord kept the Kraken strong
Joey Daccord got the start in net that I initially predicted, which was a great choice by head coach Lane Lambert. He kept the Kraken steady, stopping 24 of Calgary's 25 shots. It would have been fantastic for Daccord to get the shutout in the Kraken's season opener, but Ryan Strome snuck a puck past him in the final few minutes of the game.
Daccord has become the Kraken's starting goaltender over the past few seasons, and for good reason. He remains steady in net and keeps a good head on his shoulders, consistently keeping it on a swivel to deny rogue chances. If Daccord continues to play the way he did in this game, he will get his first shutout of the season sooner rather than later.
