On Friday, Oct. 9, the Seattle Kraken faced off against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena for their first matchup in the 2026-27 National Hockey League (NHL) season. The Red Wings scored first off a power play chance, but the Kraken answered back a few minutes later in the period.
The Red Wings took the lead early in the second period, but by the end of 40 minutes, Seattle led 5-2. The Kraken extended their lead with a sixth goal late in the third, but the Red Wings scored again to try and make the comeback. It wasn't enough, and the Kraken won 6-2.
Catton scores first again
For the second game this season, Berkly Catton scored the first goal of the game for Seattle. He received a pass from Kaapo Kakko and got the puck on his stick. With a backhanded pass, he sent it into the net to put Seattle on the board.
Catton also managed to score the Kraken's first goal in their home opener against the Calgary Flames. He also has two assists so far, giving him four points to start the season. This is Catton's second season in the NHL, and already he is finding his stride once more. His great offensive eye has been making him a great member of Seattle's third line.
He has been centering the line while Shane Wright and Kakko are at his wing. This line has already been finding success this season; let's hope they keep it up.
Gaudreau almost recorded his first career hat trick
Catton might have started the Kraken off, but it was Frederick Gaudreau who stole the show. He scored his first goal of the season 39 seconds after the Red Wings jumped back into the lead to tie the game once more. Mackie Samoskevich put the Kraken in the lead for the first time two minutes later, and less than a minute after Samoskevich's goal, Gaudreau scored his second of the period.
This marked Gaudreau's first multi-goal game with the Kraken. Last season was his first with the team, and he only scored seven goals in 68 games. In just five games this season, Gaudreau already has three. This is a great start to a strong performance for Gaudreau on the Kraken's fourth line.
Grubauer records his first win of the season
Although this game was the Kraken's fifth of the season, this was only Philipp Grubauer's second start of the season and his first win. He made 37 saves on the Red Wings' 40 shots and earned a save percentage (SV%) of . 925.
Both Daccord and Grubauer have been excellent pillars in the Kraken's goaltending, as the rest of the team's offense has been exploding. Looks like Seattle's goaltending is starting off on the right foot.
