On Wednesday, Oct. 28, the Seattle Kraken hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs for the two teams' first matchup of the 2026-27 National Hockey League (NHL) season. The game started off strong in Seattle's favor, with the Kraken getting on the board just two minutes into the game. The Maple Leafs managed to tie the game with less than a minute remaining in the first period.

16 seconds into the second, the Kraken were back on the board, but a power-play goal from Toronto evened the score once more. Seattle battled hard and scored two goals before the end of the middle frame, giving the Kraken a much-needed lead.

Toronto evened up the score with a goal in the middle of the final frame and another late in the third. However, the Kraken scored once again with less than a minute left to take a 5-4 win and secure another two points.

Catton continues strong start to season

Berkly Catton has had a good start to his sophomore NHL season, and his performance in this game continues to prove it. Catton sped into the Kraken's offensive zone to pick up the loose puck. He dished it down to Mackie Samoskevich, who passed it back up to Catton. As he got closer to the goal, he sent a brilliant backhanded shot past Sergei Bobrovsky to put Seattle on the board first.

This goal was Catton's fourth of the season, and he has 10 points in just 13 games. He also has six points in his last five games. This season is Catton's second in the NHL, and it is clear he put in the offseason training to level up his play style. He has amazing speed, and his offensive performance has been great to start. His confidence has clearly grown, and with it, Catton has become a better overall player.

Mahura scores against the Maple Leafs once more

Josh Mahura has played in 288 games in his NHL career and has 60 points to his name, 12 of which are goals. Mahura doesn't have the greatest offensive stat line, but that's okay, because that's not his primary job. However, against the Maple Leafs, he scored just 16 seconds into the second period.

Mahura's last three goals were all scored against Toronto. He scored the overtime game-winner against the Leafs last season, on Oct. 18. This goal was also his first with Seattle.

Before that, Mahura last scored in the 2022-23 season with the Florida Panthers on Jan. 17, also against the Maple Leafs. The Kraken close out the season series against the Maple Leafs on March 3. We'll see if Mahura scores a fourth goal against Toronto then.

Montour saved the Kraken's game

The Kraken had a solid, two-goal lead heading into the third period. Unfortunately, they blew it out with less than two minutes remaining. Thankfully, Brandon Montour saved the day. He received a pass at the opposite face-off circle after the Kraken won the initial face-off. Montour sent a slap shot towards the net and scored to secure the Kraken's victory.

The Kraken had a great performance leading up to the third period, setting them up for success. They allowed another third period collapse, which allowed the Maple Leafs to come back and almost forced the game to go into overtime. Montour didn't quit, and thanks to him, Seattle secured another regulation victory.
