The Seattle Kraken played the fourth game of their five-game East Game road trip against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The game started out in the Kraken's favor, with them kicking off the scoring just five minutes into the game. Before the end of the first period, the Lightning tied up the game.
Tampa Bay kicked off scoring in the second, and they had the only goal in this period. The Kraken were back on the scoreboard early in the third with a power play goal, but the Lightning put themselves back in the lead shortly after. A late third-period goal from Seattle secured a point for each team, forcing this one to go into overtime. Unfortunately for Seattle, Tampa Bay got the best of them, handing the Kraken a 4-3 loss.
Winterton struck first
Just five minutes into the game, the Kraken had the puck in their zone. While Andrei Vasilevskiy exited the crease to try and clear the puck, Frederick Gaudreau swooped in and passed it to Ryan Winterton in front of the net. Vasilevskiy tried to get back into position, but Winterton was quicker and sent the puck into the net for the Kraken's first goal of the game.
The Kraken's fourth line, made up of Winterton, Gaudreau, and Ben Meyers, has been having great success to start the season. Both Gaudreau and Winterton are tied on the leaderboard with six points each just eight games into the season.
Gaudreau has been around the NHL for awhile now, but this is just Winterton's second full-time season with the Kraken. Winterton's been learning a lot from veteran Gaudreau, and the pair are making for a solid fourth line in Seattle.
McCann found success on the power play
Early in the final frame, the Kraken had a power play chance. Right off the face-off, Chandler Stephenson sent the puck to Jordan Eberle, who was up near the net. He passed it across to Jared McCann, who was waiting on the other side. He sent it past Vasilevskiy to tie the game.
The Kraken have had a 24.0% success rate on the power play to start the season, putting them in eighth place throughout the league. Seattle has been using these extra-man advantages to put pucks in the net, as they should be. Let's hope they can keep capitalizing on the power play to put them even higher on the leaderboard.
Kraken's first loss on this road trip
Even though this game resulted in a loss, the Kraken shouldn't be too upset about losing this one. They kept the Tampa Bay Lightning at bay for most of the game and forced them to go into overtime. Since the two teams had to play extra hockey, the Kraken at least secured one point in the standings.
In their eight games to start the season, this was only the Kraken's third loss and their first in overtime. The Kraken should feel good about their start to the 2026-27 season.
The five-game East Coast road trip is about to end in Sunrise, Florida, on Saturday. Seattle has won three of the four so far and has picked up seven of a potential eight points. This alone is a great measure for how well the Kraken have started the season. We'll see if the Kraken can secure another two points against the Florida Panthers to close out the first East Coast road trip of the season on a bang.
