The Seattle Kraken are continuing their road trip to open the 2026-27 National Hockey League (NHL) season, heading to Edmonton to take on the Oilers on Saturday, Oct. 3. The Kraken opened their season against the Calgary Flames on Thursday, Oct. 1, and left Calgary with a 6-1 victory. Now, Seattle will try and start up a win streak in Edmonton.
Samoskevich set to make Kraken debut
Back in June. the Kraken traded two draft picks to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Mackie Samoskevich. The forward was poised to make his debut with his new team in Seattle's season opener on Thursday, but an upper-body injury kept him out of the lineup. Ahead of their game on Saturday, the Kraken activated Samoskevich off of IR.
Samoskevich played in 77 games with the Panthers last season and recorded 32 points via 12 goals and 20 assists. He has a great offensive eye, which will be a great addition to the Kraken. Generating offense is an area where they have struggled in the past, so hopefully, Samoskevich can come in and help the Kraken's bottom six find scoring chances.
Kraken dealing with more injuries
Although the Kraken were about to have too many players on their roster since they activated Samoskevich off of injured reserve, instead, forward Jacob Melanson was placed on injured reserve (IR) with an upper-body injury.
Melanson played in 38 games with the Kraken last season and led the team in hits with 188. He played in the Kraken's season opener and recorded 9:31 on the ice. Making the Kraken's opening night roster was a great moment for Melanson's NHL career and proved he has what it takes to play in the NHL full-time. Hopefully, the injury isn't too severe, and Melanson can return to the Kraken's lineup soon.
Daccord should remain starting goaltender
It wasn't until the last few minutes of the season opener that Joey Daccord let a goal slip by him. He kept the Kraken in the game, and their offense was what allowed Seattle to shine through on Thursday. They need to repeat this success against Edmonton on Saturday.
Daccord needs to keep his head strong and in the game. As the rest of the team scores throughout the 60 minutes, the Kraken can continue their recipe for success.
