Alex Wennberg

Signed: UFA

Age: 26

Contract: 3 years remaining at $4.5m AAV

2020-21 Season Stats: 56GP: 17G, 12A, 29P, +6

Since Alex Wennberg’s breakout season in 2016-17, he’s been slowly regressing until last year when he seemed to turn it around after the Florida Panthers took a chance on him. The way the Panthers looked at it, the contract to Wennberg was low risk, high reward, in that he earned a 1-year deal at $2.25 million. It seemed to have worked out since Wennberg scored the most goals in a season since entering the NHL and shot at a ridiculous 20.7 shooting percentage. This number earned Wennberg a new contract in Seattle for three years to hopefully center their second line. At a career 9.8 shooting percentage, this seems like an outlier, but could also be the start of a bounce-back run.

Seattle had money to spend, and who’s to say that his stats won’t get back to where they were when he was at the top of his game with 13 goals and 59 points back in 2016-17. Wennberg has always been a playmaker but switched it up last season. It is much harder to find players who can score goals than it is to find players who can pass the puck. Seattle should hope they get the player from last season rather than the player from the previous three, where he only broke 30 points once.

A Hopeful Horizon

Wennberg is young and will look to continue to rejuvenate his young career as a member of the Kraken with possibly more experienced wingers in Jaden Schwartz, Jordan Eberle, Joonas Donskoi, Calle Jarnkrok, and Brandon Tanev. Yanni Gourde will miss most likely miss some time to start the season, so we could see Wennberg elevated and playing top minutes right off the hop. With hopefully a full season on the horizon for Wennberg after shortened seasons due to injuries and COVID-19, consistency and stability will do him good in re-establishing his game as a talented center.
