The Philadelphia Flyers have many interesting, yet expensive options that the Kraken may be able to pick.
In the lead-up to the Seattle Kraken’s NHL Expansion Draft, we here at the Kraken Chronicle will look at all 30 teams and who could be taken from each. In this edition, we take a look at the Philadelphia Flyers.
As we continue to look at who may be joining the Seattle Kraken‘s debut roster, it is clear that the Philadelphia Flyers are immensely fascinating. Although they missed the postseason this past year, they do have a fairly deep team. Therefore, they are plenty of intriguing potential options for the Kraken to consider. In fact, one could argue the Kraken has a real chance of getting one of their best players from the Flyers at the Expansion Draft.
Here are three players who they could take a chance on.
Jakub Voracek (Forward, Age: 31)
Jakub Voracek‘s time in Philadelphia is coming to a close, whether the Kraken select him or not. Both parties want to move on from one another, and he will be exposed at the Expansion Draft. At a minimum, the Kraken should at least consider him, as he is still an effective top-six winger.
The 31-year-old forward had another strong season with the Flyers this year. In 53 games played, he scored 9 goals and recorded 43 total points. It is clear that he is a pass-first winger, so goals have never been his primary source of production. The Kraken certainly would benefit from having him join their power play with scorers because of this.
Voracek’s contract does come with a lot of risk, though. He has three more seasons left at an $8.25 million cap hit. Although he hasn’t shown much regression, his age may be something the Kraken keeps in mind. Yet, a potential tenure in Seattle could still end up paying dividends if he remains solid.
James van Riemsdyk (Forward, Age: 32)
James van Riemsdyk is another gifted player who may become available for the Kraken. Much like Voracek, he still is a reliable top-six winger who could be a fantastic addition because of his offensive skills. He also is 6’3″ and 217 pounds, so he can handle himself well in the physical side of the game.
van Riemsdyk also is coming off his best season since rejoining the Flyers. In 56 games, the 32-year old winger scored 17 goals and registered 43 points. Again, this is the type of offense that the Kraken may want to have if they aim to be competitive from the get-go.
His contract is another one that would be expensive to take on, though. He has two more years left on his current deal, and it has a $7 million cap hit. This is both less term and money than Voracek’s deal, so that could make them lean more towards JvR.
Shayne Gostisbehere (Defenseman, Age: 28)
Shayne Gostisbehere should be left unprotected, as he was put on waivers by the Flyers earlier this season. However, he could be a great addition for the Kraken if they are looking for an offensive defenseman. Although he is criticized for his defensive miscues, he has had some pretty spectacular seasons in the past.
In fact, this season wasn’t half bad for Gostisbehere when it came to his offensive production. In 41 games, he scored an impressive nine goals and reached 20 points in total. This was far better than his 2019-20 season, yet he still found himself out of favor with the team. Maybe on a new team, he could find his old self and hit even higher offensive totals. He does have a 65-point campaign under his belt after all. Gostisbehere replicating that may be wishful thinking, but you never truly know.
He holds a $4.5 million cap hit over the next two seasons, so he is far cheaper than the forwards. However, out of the three, he probably is the least likely to be selected.
