A beloved personality, John Forslund is the latest hire by the Seattle Kraken. He’ll take on the play-by-play announcing duty in the 2021-2022 NHL season. The latest trace of the Carolina Hurricanes to sign with the Kraken spent 25 years as their hockey voice. His expiring contract was not renewed to the displeasure of many Hurricane fans.
Forslund connected with his audience. A broadcasting legend, Seattle scored a top-shelf talent. Surely, Carolina fans will miss Forslund. The Kraken is lucky to gain such a talented, classy announcer. He’ll be welcomed with open arms to the Seattle sports landscape.
He was the best broadcast announcer throughout all NHL production in 2019-2020. It is the media equivalent of signing Leon Draisaitl. That isn’t the only accolade he received a season ago. Forslund, within the Carolina sports community, was named the North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year for the second time. He’s renowned for his professionalism and the excitement he brings to hockey.
No Kraken hire to date comes with the amount of fanfare Forslund carries. He’s the perfect hire for any NHL broadcast. When Seattle scores their first goal in franchise history, they have the right man to make the call. Forslund is infectious, transcending his excitement to the viewers at home. He, as important as his calls, understands the art of letting a moment breathe.
Alongside Forslund will be Everett Fitzhugh. Making headline news, Fitzhugh is the first full-time black play-by-play announcer. The Kraken has not only made history by breaking race barriers within the NHL, but they’ve constructed a highly talented broadcast tandem. Between Fitzhugh and Forslund, Seattle has raised the bar for any NHL game broadcast. Previously, Fitzhugh spent half a decade with the Cincinnati Cyclones, the Buffalo Sabres’ ECHL affiliate.
Developing in front of the Kraken fanbase will be extraordinary for Fitzhugh at the NHL level. It’s arguably one of the most exciting parts of the broadcast team. Already a “dream come true” for Fitzhugh, he’ll be working alongside the best announcer in the NHL. Like sniping a top corner for a game-winning goal, Seattle made two clutch hires.
Most recently, Forslund called games in the Toronto hockey bubble during the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs. His style made the Philadelphia Flyers versus New York Islanders Eastern Conference Semifinal series seem larger than life. The Springfield College alumni, alongside Fitzhugh, will make every Kraken game a big-time event. “Hey, hey, whadda ya say!” Welcome to Seattle hockey, John Forslund!
